A yunomi is a form of tea cup used in Japan usually in informal settings. Yunomi are typically taller than they are wide, some of the ones here don't exactly fit this description and may be used for matcha. These pieces were thrown by Fred Follansbee. Fred has been working with clay at Lill Street Art Center in Chicago since the summer of 2003. He began with hand-building and then around 2005, started to learn to throw pots on the wheel. He initially became interested in Japanese pottery while studying bonsai. His interest in bonsai pots led to an interest in Japanese pottery. He is fascinated by the seemingly simplicity of the tea bowl. Although it seems simple at first, the more time spent studying the form, the more complexities appear.
